As an Oklahoma City / Edmond maternity photographer, I often get questions about the best clothing to wear for an outdoor maternity photography session. Now let’s be honest… choosing outfits for family photos can always be a little stressful. Factor in a third-trimester pregnant belly, and it gets even harder. Don’t worry mamas, I’m here to help!
This is always my first suggestion for inquiring pregnant mamas. I also suggest keeping the length at a maxi or midi. A longer dress not only flatters your bump in the best way, but also allows you to move around, sit, and lay comfortably throughout your session. Also, nothing looks better than a dress flowing a bit in the wind! Some of my favorite shops for dresses include Roolee, Pink Blush, Old Navy, and Baltic Born.
When your babies are all grown, these may be some of your most cherished photos. For that reason, you want to choose an outfit that will stand the test of time. Wearing a solid color, texture, or smaller print/pattern will help you do just that! Sometimes larger prints/patterns distract from your perfect bump, and that’s the last thing we want for these photos! As always, avoid super bright / neon colors, logos, & horizontal stripes.
Make sure your outfit of choice is comfortable, including your shoes! I promise not to make you run uphill, but we will definitely do some walking, and probably some dancing and swinging if you have kiddos! Leave the heels at home and stick to flats or short booties.
After you first decide on what you’re wearing, choose complimenting colors for your family. You can either pull colors out of your outfit, or when in doubt, just go with a neutral that won’t distract from you.
These are my best suggestions for what photographs well and what other mamas have felt best in. As always, at the end of the day you should absolutely wear what feels like you and your unique style!
