If you’ve ever wondered what exactly “lifestyle photography” means, you’re not alone. Families ask me all the time what makes this style different from traditional portraits or documentary work. The truth is, lifestyle photography is more than a buzzword. It’s an approach that blends art of photography and the heart of your family in a way that feels real, relaxed, and timeless.
But before we dive in, let me introduce myself.
Hi, I’m Haley!
After a decade of photographing families, I’ve learned that the best images are the most honest. My heart is to create connection-led sessions that feel natural, not forced. Whether you’re a parent planning your first family photos or a fellow photographer learning how to elevate your client experience, I’m here to share what I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way!) so you don’t have to.
When I’m not behind the camera or mentoring other photographers, you’ll probably find me chasing my two little girls, planning our next taco night, or sneaking outside to soak up golden hour just for fun. I’m so glad you’re here.
Defining Lifestyle Photography (And Clearing Up Confusion)
Why Families Choose Lifestyle Over Traditional Portraits
Maybe it’s helpful to start by talking about what lifestyle photography is NOT. Lifestyle photography is not portrait photography, which tends to be posed or staged (hello Glamourshots!); but it’s also not documentary photography, which captures moments as they happen with absolutely no input from the photographer (think photojournalism). With lifestyle photography, it tends to land nicely somewhere right in the middle of these two styles.
Lifestyle photography is guided by authenticity. I’ll give you simple direction and gentle prompts, but what shines through are your natural interactions, your family’s connections, and the little expressions that make you who you are.
A lifestyle session gives you something very different from stiff, traditional portraits.
Lifestyle photography is about preserving your family as you are right now in the most natural and meaningful way.
So what does that actually look like in a session? Let’s walk through it.
If you’ve worked with me before, you know my sessions are always relaxed and playful, yet guided and prompted without being stiffly posed or staged. I promise to tell you where to stand and what to do with your hands, but you’ll never hear me asking for cheesy smiles. Don’t worry though, we’ll be sure to capture that classic “everyone smiling at the camera”, but 95% of your gallery will show all those other moments of you doing what you do best – loving on each other!
Using beautiful light, my job as a lifestyle photographer is to direct your family in specific ways while capturing the genuine connections and emotions that follow. The cool thing is, I might tell 10 different families to do the exact same thing, i.e. “Everybody snuggle in close” or “Now dance around with your kiddo” but each person/family is going to follow those directions totally differently. This creates a gallery that is full of connection, love, movement, and fun, and is totally unique to your family!

There’s a certain magic to photographing families right where they live. This Oklahoma City session unfolded in the comfort of a family’s home. Kids played on their own turf, parents cuddled on the couch, and laughter bounced off familiar walls. The images feel easy, relaxed, and deeply personal because they were captured in the space this family loves most!

Maternity sessions are already special, but add in siblings and you capture the story of a family on the cusp of change. In this lifestyle session, we celebrated not only the growing bump, but the people who were already there to welcome the new baby!
The big sibling reached out to touch mom’s belly, giggled during playful moments, and leaned in for hugs that said more than words ever could. Dad’s quiet gestures -a hand on mom’s back, a smile toward their child- showed the love and anticipation of what was to come.

This newborn session took place in a historic Mesta Park home that is full of character and charm. The newborn session included meaningful artwork created by dad, keepsakes, and even their beloved dog.
Baby Ivy was 6 weeks old, and instead of placing her into traditional newborn poses, the session honored her natural expressions, bright eyes, and sweet curiosity.
