I just love everything about Fall – the earthy tones and crisp air create the perfect backdrop for your fall family session. After booking your fall photo session, your next step might be looking in closets and shopping online for what to wear. Here are some of my best tips for coordinating each family member’s outfit:
Think rich oranges, deep reds, warm browns, and soft greens! Consider the setting of your fall photo session—whether it’s a natural landscape, an urban backdrop, or a festive location like a Christmas tree farm. Aim to coordinate your outfits to blend seamlessly with the environment, this will help your family shine as the focus of the images.
I love when my clients incorporate at least one pattern or print in their outfits. I suggest pulling colors from the pattern to create a harmonious look. For example, mom’s dress can inspire color choices for other family members’ outfits!
The most important factor when choosing outfits is comfort! I LOVE to have fun with my families in our sessions. Think running, jumping, sitting, and playing! It is so helpful when everyone can move freely without feeling restricted. Specifically, try to avoid frilly or fussy outfits that may require frequent adjustments, and opt for comfortable clothing that allows for spontaneous moments and candid shots!
Adding variety in your families clothing selections style and photograph beautifully and adds nice visual interest to your photos. Instead of everyone wearing the same type of clothing, try mixing it up! Here are just a few ideas:
This variety not only adds interest to your photos but can also highlight each family member’s unique style and personality. We can probably all recall those sweet seasons when one of our little ones loved wearing a specific item of clothing all the time, like rain boots no matter what the weather. Adding an element like that into an outfit will make your heart so happy when you look back on images from that time. Like this sweet family’s images below:
I find that small details can make a BIG impact! Choose comfortable (not new) shoes, and skip the sneakers. Consider leaving the Apple Watch at home and opting for an analog watch or simple jewelry instead. Also layering tights, sweaters, button-downs, and more all add interest and look great in the fall!
Lastly, if you are adding to your wardrobe and looking for items for your session, here are a few of my favorite places to shop:
I love these pretty and affordable dresses for mom: One Loved Babe, Roolee, Piper & Scoot, & Baltic Born.
For the kids: H&M, Zara, Rylee & Cru, and One Loved Babe Kids.
When dressing my husband for our family photos, I always have great luck with Target or Old Navy.
By adding in just a few of these ideas, you’ll be well-prepared for our fall photo session together! I can’t wait to work with you and capture the heart of the season for you and most importantly the heart of your family.
And remember, I’m always here to help and give advice if you want to send me outfit ideas or options!
